Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter - PRESIDENT BY DAY, VAMPIRE HUNTER BY NIGHT

1

“Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter” tweaks history onscreen as America’s most iconic and beloved president Abraham Lincoln is portrayed as a vampire slaying powerful political figure of his time.

Visionary filmmakers Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (director of “Wanted”) bring a fresh voice to the bloodthirsty lore of the vampire, imagining Lincoln as history's greatest hunter of the undead.

Taking the role of the multi-faceted Lincoln in the movie as politico, husband and the person he became when his mother died at a young age is stage actor Benjamin Walker who has also appeared in Clint Eastwood’s “Flags of Our Fathers” and in the movie “Kinsey”.

Before Walker takes center stage as Abraham, the audience will meet the character as a child. His journey begins when his mother Nancy is stricken with a disease of unknown origin – but recognizable to young Abraham as resulting from a vampire’s bite. Nancy was a woman of intelligence and heart, imparting on her son the notion that, “until everyone is free, we are all slaves.” Abraham never forgot those words, which came to define his views toward slavery. Nor would he ever forget the eternal evil responsible for his mother’s death: a vampire (and local businessman) named Jack Barts, portrayed by Marton Csokas, against whom Abraham swears revenge.

Finding an actor able to wear that burden was a process, says Bekmambetov. “There were two main reasons we settled on Ben Walker,” he reveals. “The first was that he shared Lincoln's personality. He has an unbelievable, grounded and sarcastic sense of humor and he's a very straightforward, honest man. The second reason was strategic: we wanted to choose an actor who brings no baggage to the screen. We wanted the audience to believe they were seeing Lincoln, and not a movie star playing Lincoln.”

2

Walker is aware of the challenge inherent in accepting the role. “As a country, we're always looking for heroes, and Lincoln is the quintessential American hero,” he says. “He's self-created, self-educated and a common man who made himself extraordinary. I think we're fascinated by that.”

For Walker, the story works as an allegory for Lincoln's real struggle. He may not have fought vampires in real history, but he certainly waged plenty of battles of his own. “In everyone's life, there comes a point where you have to choose how you're going to live and what kind of person you're going to be,” says Walker. “And Lincoln finds that in his life: how he's going to truly defeat this evil, whether with an axe late at night or whether he's going to put those things away and become what we know today.”

For Seth Grahame-Smith from whose book of the same title the movie was adapted and who also serves as screenwriter and executive producer for the film, meeting Walker on set for the first time was quite an experience. “It was very eerie at times,” he laughs. “Ben's a classically trained theatrical actor who went to Juilliard, and he approached the role with intense seriousness. His research and his physical and voice training were all very intense, and he didn't approach it as a genre movie; he approached it as an historical drama. I think that's one of the things that make this movie special. It has a central performance that's stronger than you usually find in these big summer movies.”

Evercool a proud Local brand making waves in motoring industry.

In less than two decades, the company has established Evercool as a local brand with a truly global reach. Apart from supplying radiators to customer segments nationwide, the company also participates actively in the international market, exporting Evercool to a rapidly growing overseas clientele. Among the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) assemblers that have given the Evercool brand nods of approval and acclaim are Mitsubishi Motors Philippines, Isuzu Philippines, Columbian Motors and Pilipinas Hino.

Picture2

"Our production of OEM-quality radiators allows us to distinguish ourselves from the competition," says Gonzalez. "It is also the reason why OEM companies like Mitsubishi and Isuzu, among others, continue to rely on the performance of Evercool, a local product that we're proud to say has transcended geographic borders."

Key to this international success is the global quality standard with which every radiator is built, as well as the management process under which everyone at Roberts AIPMC works and operates. The company develops all its products in a 1,300-sq.m. Manufacturing plant at the Canlubang Industrial Estate in Cabuyao, Laguna—treating quality as its currency at all times. By following an ISO 9001:2008-certified quality management system, using JIS-compliant (Japanese International Standard) materials, and subjecting each radiator to rigid quality and durability tests, Roberts AIPMC is thus able to churn out of its sprawling plant consistent, world-class quality radiators at an impressive rate of approximately 13,000 units per month.

The Evercool catalog now features 350 models of radiators, but one can well expect this to continually grow. "Our facility is equipped for and capable of future expansion," says Gonzalez. "Our mission now is to develop our most important resources—our people—so that we can maintain our industry leadership and position ourselves for even bigger growth."

PROMETHEUS: AESTHETICALLY WORKING HELMETS

prometheusE_screencap5

In returning to the genre he helped define, Ridley Scott continues to push the boundaries of storytelling, both visually and thematically. As he notes, he’s all about the “everything” – from story structure to casting, from sets and costumes to new ways of telling a story. And while the renowned filmmaker is scaring the hell out of you, he never loses sight of the big picture. “After you’ve seen Prometheus,” Scott concludes, “you will have experienced something completely unexpected.”

In parallel to the film’s post-viewing experience, the actors likewise have undergone a gratifying filming experience with the helmets developed for the film.

prometheusE_screencap6

Scott mandated a globe-shaped helmet with no blind spots. Each helmet had nine working video screens, lighting, an oxygen supply run on two fans with battery packs within the backpack. The exterior of the helmet features a fully functioning torch and HD cameras with a transmitter and recorder.

The helmet has 9 working LED screens, all with specially designed graphics, five of them in the globe, and the others in the glass. The graphics have all been designed by the art department to look like official tech. It's the seismic activity of the land.

prometheusE_screencap10

Then there's LED lighting everywhere. There’s a light in the top. There’s a skull cap, which is wired for sound so they can not only speak, they can hear direction. And most importantly, it’s completely wired up for air because Ridley said that on ALIEN, the panic that would set in after their actors had been in the helmets for more than 30 seconds was immense. Plus there’s all that condensation you get on the globe.

prometheusE_screencap26

The backpack really functions as a huge battery loader for all the electronics. The editor, Pietro Scalia, decided he wanted to be able to see through the mounted cameras, so they're real HD cameras, which come with big recorders and great big transmitters. But apparently the footage has been great – you can intercut, so that right in the middle of a scene you get little gems: little bits and bobs that a wide camera can't.

Prometheus costume designer Janty Yates shares, “We'll make about 60 of these helmets. We've got so many stunts. It's a constant process of making and mending them. There are so many things that can and do go wrong with the electronics, but even with all the maintenance you have to do I think we must have saved them a fortune, because if it weren't built into the suit they'd have had to create it in post and that would have been so much more difficult.”

prometheusV_screencap13

“Even a little knock to the helmet could knock out the whole sequence. They're so fragile, but they're just beautiful things. The result of having all these lights in the suit itself is that you end up with the actors bathed in this exquisite lighting. My guys have to get together with Dariusz Wolski, the cinematographer, and figure out what was going to work and where. They strips of light look like inverted halos and they light the faces really exquisitely,” recalls Yates.

Ride with PROMETHEUS in the speed of light years when it opens June 6 in theaters all over the Philippines – from 20th Century Fox to be distributed by Warner Bros. Visit and like 20thCenturyFoxPh facebook page for more of Prometheus and upcoming films.
